International students planning to study in the United Kingdom should prepare for increased financial maintenance requirements for Student visa applications. From 30 November 2026, applicants who need to meet the financial requirement must show higher funds for living expenses. Early planning will help students and families manage budgets and prepare the necessary documents.
For students studying in London, the monthly maintenance requirement will rise from £1,529 to £1,570. For courses lasting nine months or longer, applicants will need to demonstrate up to £14,130 for living costs, compared with the previous amount of £13,761. This is an increase of £369.
Students studying outside London will also face higher requirements. The monthly amount will increase from £1,171 to £1,203. Over nine months, the required funds will rise from £10,539 to £10,827, an increase of £288. These figures apply to Student visa applications submitted on or after 30 November 2026.
Maintenance funds cover living expenses and are separate from tuition fees. Students may need to show enough money for outstanding tuition fees in addition to the required living costs. When preparing a budget, include accommodation, food, transport, study materials and other daily expenses.
Applicants using personal savings should carefully review the financial evidence rules. Funds generally need to remain in the account for at least 28 consecutive days without falling below the required amount. Documents must also meet the relevant timing requirements.
Students should check their course location, application date, tuition balance and financial documents before applying. Starting early can help identify problems and provide time to correct them. Careful preparation supports a smoother visa application and a more confident transition to university life in the UK.
