Since 2018, the Mark International Debate Union has proudly created a platform where the university students, international researchers, public intellectuals, and influential voices of any background come together to discuss important topics and exchange ideas in areas such as politics, religion, science, Economics, Business, Climate change, Artificial Intelligence, Dignity, Digital transformation, Innovation, ML, literature, and the arts.
Our debates take place every Tuesday evening during term time in Manchester.
Debate coaching and training sessions are held every Monday at 5:00pm in Manchester.

Each debate features guest speakers presenting arguments either for or against a selected motion.
The debate begins with the first speaker supporting the motion, who introduces the topic and the other speakers on their side. This is followed by the first opposition speaker, who introduces their team and presents the opening argument against the motion. Usually, each side consists of three to four speakers who take turns presenting their viewpoints.
The outcome of the debate is decided by a vote, with attendees leaving the chamber through doors labelled “Ayes” or “Noes”, similar to the voting process used in the House of Commons.
After the debate, members can gather in the bar area while waiting for the final result to be announced once all votes have been counted. They may also continue discussing the motion while enjoying available food and drink offers. Guest speakers, committee members, student speakers, and selected members are also invited to attend a small drinks reception as a gesture of appreciation for their involvement.
Members are encouraged to participate actively.
During the debate, audience members may challenge speakers by raising a “point of information”. However, it is entirely up to the speaker whether they wish to accept the interruption.
The house rules and debate procedures are provided on all order papers, which are available in the debating chamber and on our website.
Members are also welcome to share their opinions by delivering short floor speeches when the discussion is opened to the audience.
For those who wish to improve their confidence and public speaking abilities in a more informal environment, there is also an “emergency debate” held before each main debate session.
The motion for each week’s debate is normally chosen at the beginning of the week and is often based on current affairs and major news stories.
